Ohara Moss and Village Roads

Ohara sits in the northern hills, about an hour from central Kyoto. The distance is part of the experience: the dense city gives way to fields, wooded slopes, and temple gardens.

Start at Sanzen-in when it opens. Walk its moss gardens slowly, then browse the approach for local vegetables, pickles, or a simple lunch. In the afternoon, cross the valley through village lanes toward Jakko-in.

The two temple areas sit on opposite sides of Ohara. Walking between them reveals more of the place than adding another distant attraction. Allow extra time for the return bus, especially in autumn.

Ohara suits second-time visitors, garden lovers, and anyone recovering from central Kyoto's crowds. Rain is not a reason to cancel; wet moss and mist often improve the atmosphere.
