What to know
Fushimi is more than the torii gates at Fushimi Inari. Farther south, old transport canals and rows of sake breweries tell the story of Kyoto's water and trade.
Begin near Chushojima Station and walk the canal toward the brewery district. Visit one museum or tasting room, then continue through the shopping streets toward Fushimi-Momoyama Station. Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is a clear introduction for first-time sake drinkers.
Kyoto sake is shaped by the area's soft groundwater. Compare a small number of pours and ask about sweetness, acidity, and serving temperature. Japan's legal drinking age is 20. Do not cycle after tasting.
Pair the district with Fushimi Inari only if you start early. Keep the brewery walk for late morning or afternoon, when museums and shops are open.
