Use Trains Before Buses in Kyoto
A simpler way to cross Kyoto without spending the day in traffic.
Kyoto's buses reach almost everywhere, but they are not always the best first choice. Popular routes fill quickly during commuting hours, cherry blossom season, and autumn foliage.
## The core rule
Use JR, Keihan, Hankyu, the subway, Randen, or Eizan Railway to get close to an area. Use a bus only for the final section that trains cannot cover.
- Fushimi Inari: JR Nara Line or Keihan Railway. - Arashiyama: JR, Hankyu, or Randen. - Gion and southern Higashiyama: Keihan Railway is often easier than a bus from Kyoto Station. - Ohara: subway to Kokusaikaikan, then Kyoto Bus.
Carry an IC card, keep routes geographically compact, and avoid crossing the city for one cafe or photo.
